WHAT IS BACKFLOW?

Backflow is a reversal of the normal direction of water flow in your water supply plumbing system. It presents a hazard where your water supply is unintentionally interconnected with a source of pollution. These pollutants can then enter the water supply. As a result, every connection to our drinking water supply must have a backflow prevention device installed to stop any contamination occurring. The device used must be appropriate for the land use and activities carried out at the property and a commercial property may have a higher risk rating than a residential one.

BACKFLOW PREVENTION

All connections to our drinking water supply must have a backflow prevention device appropriate for the land use risk rating, to prevent contamination of our states water supply. You will normally find your device near your watermeter.

WHAT CAUSES BACKFLOW?

Backflow can only occur when the water delivery main is at a lower pressure than your plumbing system. For example, when there is a burst or ruptured main, during firefighting operations or if a pump is connected to your water plumbing system.

MAINTENANCE

Backflow prevention devices at the boundary belong to the property owner and must be maintained by the owner / occupier Testable backflow prevention devices must be installed on high or medium risk properties. These devices require testing at commissioning, after any maintenance or at least every 12 months by a licensed plumbing contractor permitted to test these devices. Failure to maintain these backflow devices will result in the serving of a non-compliance notice and possible fines up to $2,000.

WHEN SHOULD A BACKFLOW PREVENTION DEVICE BE INSTALLED?

The following will require backflow prevention devices to be fitted at each and every connection to the drinking water supply:

  • New developments
  • Redevelopments of existing facilities
  • Changes to any existing water service
  • Additions and alterations
  • Multiple residence and commercial buildings
  • Applications that involve a fire service,
This excludes existing fire services unless alterations are being carried out
  • All new fire services require a medium rated device.

Connection to decorative fountains, swimming pools, fish ponds or ornamental lakes may provide a backflow risk. These installations need to be assessed and approved prior to installation
